Reviewing 'Is Genesis History?'

On Thursday, February 23, select movie theaters around the country presented a special one-night showing of the documentary Is Genesis History?1 The film was hosted by Dr. Del Tackett, well-known for his role in Focus on the Family's apologetics series The Truth Project. We had the privilege of viewing Is Genesis History? with packed audiences in the Dallas area.

The film presented a thoughtful and persuasive case that the first eleven chapters of Genesis should be understood as actual history, and that the rocks and fossils—often erroneously claimed as evidence for evolution and millions of years—were actually the result of the worldwide Flood in the days of Noah. We thought the movie was excellent, both in the quality of information presented and in its production value. Given the diversity of opinions among creation scientists on a number of topics, those who are well-versed in the creation literature may quibble with a few of the statements made by the participating scientists. Nevertheless, these scientists made a strong, convincing, unified, and unashamed case for a historical Genesis.

The documentary included interviews with thirteen Ph.D. researchers, including experts in geology, astronomy, biology, fossils, and the Bible. Del Tackett accompanied these experts to such places as the Grand Canyon, a dinosaur dig site in Wyoming, museums, and even beneath the sea. Each location revealed new evidence for recent creation and/or a recent, global Flood.

Several moments in the film stood out. There was an audible "gasp" in the theater when the film showed footage of soft, elastic, dinosaur tissue under a microscope. This revealed that many people have not yet seen this powerful argument for recent creation. ICR described the tissue find, which researchers described in the technical journal Acta Histochimica, in 2013.2 The audience chuckled at Del Tackett's astonishment when Dr. Carter described four interconnected dimensions of DNA information and when Dr. Wood humorously pointed out that a notable difference between man and apes is that apes in zoos remain behind bars, while human visitors are free to go home.

Dr. Tackett and Compass Media produced a high-quality documentary and took an unapologetic stand for a historical Genesis. Those of us at ICR who have seen the film wholly endorse it. We pray that God will use this movie, along with the resources of ICR and other creation ministries, to challenge those—including many Christians—who have dismissed or downplayed the historicity of the first book of the Bible.

For those who missed the movie's first showing, two encore presentations are scheduled for March 2 and March 7. Tickets may be purchased via the film's website.1
